Needing some help on what is required to install an aftermarket amp in my vehicle. I want to retain the stock sync headunit. I am just a bit confused on what exactly is needed to install an aftermarket amp. Thanks.

What sync unit? Can you take some pictures of what you have and post them. That way we can make better suggestions.
Also just a sub? All speakers no sub? All speakers and sub?
We need more info on exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

As you Said you have the Sony system the first thing you need is an interface.
i recommend the PAC Audio AP4-FD11.
This transforms the CAN bus controlled fixed line level signal into variable line level or even optical out in case you want to feed a DSP.
Anyway, with the AmpPro it doesn’t matter which way you go, you get maximum flexibility.

It’s a Sync1. But that doesn’t matter. Only information of importance is the „Sony system“ if you want to add amps and other speakers. And for that you need the AmpPro.

Well, you retain your headunit. You just get an interface for RCA Outputs to add a DSP and/or amplifiers.

The AmpPro is way better quality in regards to quality of the signal.

The problem with a normal loc on the Sony system, is each channel is crossed over to the sub. So you'd have to tap your sub lines for bass, but a lot of people are not happy with those results (the HU does some fun stuff to protect the little subwoofer at higher volumes).
If you tap front lines, you'll get very little bass.
I'd go pac amp pro in a heartbeat
